Is Radiation from the Japanese Fukushima Nuclear Disaster Coming to the United States?

UPDATE – May 18th, 2024
The Fukushima nuclear accident resulted in the release of radioactive materials into the Pacific Ocean, some of which eventually reached the West Coast of the United States. However, the levels detected were considered extremely low and did not pose a significant health risk. Here are the key points:

  • Radioactive cesium (134Cs and 137Cs) from Fukushima was detected in Pacific bluefin tuna caught off the U.S. west coast in 2011-2012, indicating they had migrated from waters near Japan. However, the levels were well below safety limits for consumption.
  • Modeling studies estimated that a small fraction (around 1-5%) of the total radioactive releases from Fukushima reached the west coast of North America by 2014-2015. The levels were orders of magnitude lower than those near Fukushima.
  • According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the very low levels of radiation from Fukushima that reached the U.S. West Coast were negligible and did not raise public health concerns.
  • The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) concluded that radiation exposures for the general public in the U.S. and other countries outside Japan were negligible as a result of the Fukushima accident.

In summary, while trace amounts of Fukushima radiation were detected on the U.S. West Coast, primarily in migratory marine species, the levels were extremely low and posed no significant health risks according to international scientific assessments. The vast majority of radioactive contamination from the accident was confined to the waters around Fukushima.

Thank Yahovah that the radiation levels did not cause a dramatic increase on the U.S. West Coast.

Do not be fearful.

Yahovah always wants you to trust 100% in His ability to save your eternal soul; and in His infinite wisdom and foresight, He has also given us many things for the benefit of our temporal health.

First and foremost believe in His Son, Yeshua, (commonly known as Jesus), whom Yahovah sent as the sacrificial Lamb for the salvation of the world.

Accept the sacrifice, repent of sins, and turn from them.

Find comfort in the Love of Yahovah and His Son Yeshua.

Please pray for the people of Japan. We mourn their suffering and great loss.

On March 15, 2011 some of the U.S. Government Agencies were reporting that it is “very unlikely” that dangerous levels of radioactive fallout from the Japanese reactor disasters will make their way to U.S. soil.

On that same day, March 15th, Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman David McIntyre told the AFP, “Right now it’s quite possible that there could be some radiation floating over the United States. But we don’t think that it would be particularly harmful… even in a worst-case scenario,”

As of Friday, March 18th, 2011, some of these same U.S. Government Agencies are continuing to insist that there is no danger from foreign contaminated material reaching the West Coast of the United States. However, public concern continues as many people are suspicious that the Government is downplaying the situation.

These same agencies are also suggesting that it is not necessary to buy Potassium Iodide(KI) tablets, which is a common substance used to prevent thyroid damage during such an event.

CONSUMER ALERT: Many unscrupulous profiteers are playing in the public’s fear and are introducing fake Potassium Iodide (KI) pills into the marketplace. The FDA has approved only three KI products, listed on their website, which are iosat tablets (made by Anbex), ThyroSafe tablets (made by Recipharm AB) and ThyroShield solution (from Fleming & Company Pharmaceuticals). These products can only protect against harm from radioactive iodine. For other exposure, the agency has approved products that can help the body eliminate radioactive elements more quickly, such as calcium-CTPA and zinc DTPA or Prussian blue capsules.

I understand that many of you are skeptical of such reports and wish to have Potassium Iodine on hand nonetheless, and many of you seem fearful that you cannot acquire it, as it is currently sold out across the Country.

At this point, we hope and pray that the reports of “unlikely dangerous levels” will remain true.

To stay personally informed of the radiation levels in the U.S., visit the following links which feature real-time monitoring systems.

( Click Here for real-time radiation readings in the U.S. by Black Cat Systems. Readings are in uR/hr for Cs137/Co60. Typical background radiation levels for most of the USA are in the 5 to 28 uR/hr range.

The Inspector picks up ionizing radiation and measures in Counts per Minutes or CPM. Normal background radiation has been determined to be in the range of 40 to 46 CPM.)

While we continue to hope that the radiation that reaches the U.S. will have dispersed and will be too weak to be a hazard, we still want to share some simple things that individuals can do to protect themselves fom the pollution from the Japanese reactors; and from toxins and pollutions in general.

The good news is that even without Potassium Iodine on hand, there are a number of non invasive treatment options that are potentially as effective, and readily available from your local grocery store. While I am sure that you are eager to learn about these alternative treatment options, please take a look at the following statement taken from Wikipedia, which explains the function of Potassium Iodide.

[1] Potassium iodide was approved in 1982 by the US FDA to protect the thyroid glands from radioactive iodine from accidents or fission emergencies. In the event of an accident or attack at a nuclear power plant, or fallout from a nuclear bomb, volatile fission product radionuclides may be released, of which I-131 is one of the most common by-products and a particularly dangerous one due to thyroid gland concentration of it, which may lead to thyroid cancer. By saturating the body with a source of stable iodide prior to exposure, inhaled or ingested I-131 tends to be excreted.

WHO Recommended Dosage for Radiological Emergencies involving radioactive iodine
Age KI in mg
Over 12 years old 130
3 – 12 years old 65*
1 – 36 months old 32
< 1 month old 16

(* contained in one tablet specific for this use)

The World Health Organization recommends that nuclear fallout KI prophylaxis is not recommended for adults over 40 years, unless inhaled radiation dose levels are expected to threaten thyroid function; because, the KI side effects increases with age and may exceed the KI protective effects.

A saturated solution of KI (SSKI) is typically given orally in adult doses of about 250 mg iodide several times a day (5 drops of SSKI assumed to be ⅓ mL) for thyroid blockage and occasionally as an expectorant. At these doses, and sometimes at much lower doses, side effects may include: acne, loss of appetite, or upset stomach (especially during the first several days, as the body adjusts to the medication). More severe side effects which require notification of a physician are: fever, weakness, unusual tiredness, swelling in the neck or throat, mouth sores, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, irregular heartbeat, numbness or tingling of the hands or feet, or a metallic taste in the mouth. [End Wikipedia Quotes]

When an individual comes in contact with high levels of radiation or with extended exposure to radiation, the thyroid gland will absorb high quantities of the volatile fission product radionuclides I-131. which will potentially cause cancer of the thyroid, as well as other physical illnesses and diseases. The introduction of the Potassium Iodide saturates the thyroid with the stable Iodide, and therefore the unstable I-131 that is inhaled or ingested tends to be eliminated, thereby possibly preventing thyroid cancer.

It is recommended that you only consume the Potassium Iodide in the event that radiation levels have reached a severe level, as some people will find themselves allergic, and those over 40 years old may find that the side effects exceed the protective effects. We recommend that you consult your physician before consuming Potassium Iodide because of its many possible side effects.

If you decide that you want to use Iodide, but the Potassium Iodide tablets are not available, according to research by Ken Miller, a health physicist at the Hershey Medical Center, an adult can get a blocking dose of stable iodine by applying 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm approx. 2 hours prior to I-131 contamination.

ALERT: DO NOT ORALLY CONSUME IODINE. IT IS FOR TOPICAL USE ONLY AND CAN BE FATAL IF SWALLOWED.

It should also be noted that there is mixed opinion concerning the method of swabbing liquid iodine onto the skin. Some Pharmacists and Doctors have said that it is effective in protecting the thyroid glands, while others have told us that it is not effective. The decision is up to you, and we recommend asking your personal health care professionals for their best advice.

The abstract of his study titled “Effectiveness of Skin Absorption of Tincture of I in Blocking Radioiodine from the Human Thyroid Gland” from Health Physics, June 1989, Vol. 56, No. 6, pages 911-914, states:

“Although there were large variations within each subject group in regard to serum-I levels and thyroid uptakes, the increase in serum-I concentration after topical-I application was effective in reducing the thyroid uptake of I131. The authors conclude that in the absence of KI, most humans would benefit from topical application of tincture of-I, and that in some the effectiveness would equal that of oral KI.”

Potassium Iodide can be an effective treatment for preventing saturation of radionuclides in the thyroid, but what many are unaware of is that other parts of the body, such as bone marrow, will not be protected. This can create a false sense of protection for those who use this treatment. The alternative approach presented in this article will attempt to address the wellness of the whole body.

We recommend that you discuss these options with your Doctor and that they should be used in conjunction with their recommended treatment options. It is not meant to replace your Doctor’s recommendations. Not all treatment options are right for everybody, and even natural treatments can have potentially negative side effects for some individuals.

It should also be noted, that according to FDA regulation, you should be notified that…”The following statements and suggestions have not been evaluated by the FDA. The products and substances suggested below are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease”.

It is true that any support for the effectiveness of these suggestions are purely anecdotal and based on certain individual’s personal experiences. Their success does not necessarily guarantee your success.

The alternative method used for protection from the damaging effects of radiation (and general pollutants and toxins) is a multi-faceted approach, consisting of nutritional elements that will attempt to eliminate the radionuclides from the body. In the event of contamination, the goal is to detox the radioactive material from the body.

It is recommended that you try to include as many of these methods as possible for the best results. They are not in any specific order.

1) Spirulina – One of our favorites because of its reported effectiveness by those who have used it to address cancer and reported positive results. 5 grams per day (a little more than one heaping teaspoon)

2) Sodium Bicarbonate “Baking Soda”

Internal: 1/4 teaspoon Sodium Bicarbonate “Baking Soda” in filtered water daily.

External: Take a bath with up to 4 Cups Sodium Bicarbonate “Baking Soda”, mixed with 4 pounds of sea salt. (Sea salt can be found in the bulk section of some grocery and health food stores. Soak in very hot bath until water cools. This can be done frequently.

3) Seaweed – Eat alone or add to Miso Soup, Brown Rice, etc. Reported as an effective treatment against radiation poisoning in Japan during World War II.

4) Vitamin C – Up to 1,000mg daily

5) European Green Clay – 1 teaspoon of powdered clay in 8 oz. of water (distilled water)

6) Brown Rice (organic) – Also reported as an effective treatment against radiation poisoning in Japan during World War II.

7) Miso Soup – This was also reported as an effective treatment against radiation poisoning in Japan during World War II.. (Best uncooked or slightly warmed. Do not boil. Add ingredients such as organic chives, onions, tofu, mushrooms, mineral salt, etc.)

8) Detox Tea (Organic) – Drink 2 or 3 cups per day

9) Detox Treatments – Many are available on the market. We have no recommendations for a specific brand. Look for detox programs that address different or multiple body organs.

10) Vitamin B12 – 1,000 micrograms per day

11) Organic Green Vegetables, and beta-carotene foods, such as organic carrots.

12) MSM – 2000-4000 mg. (2-4 grams) daily. Take a lower amount at first to become accustomed to it. Add crystal form to orange juice to mask bitterness and enhance effectiveness.

13) Fiber – Psyllium husk can be purchased in bulk and added to 100% pure juice.

14) Zinc – Intake of zinc should be kept to under 100 mg per day as larger amounts may result in nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness and hallucinations.

15) Turmeric – Add to food

16) Kombucha Tea – Buy in liquid form, not the tea bag, self-steeping form.

17) Green Tea – Drink as many cups as you like daily. A great source of antioxidants.

18) Iron – 10 to 18 mg per day. Do not exceed 50mg per day, as overconsumption of iron can be toxic.

19) Ginsing – 20 to 40 drops before meals, two or three times per day.  Children: single dose one drop per each year of age, repeated twice a day. Panax Ginseng:  Studies have found this Asian version is effective against radiation as well. Researchers observed ginseng increases the rate of production of serum albumin and gamma-globulin as well as DNA and RNA protein, and lipid synthesis in bone marrow cells.

20) Meat consumption should be minimized and preferably high quality and free range.

21) Fish – contain Iodine

22) Calcium – reported to block the uptake of radioactive stronium-90. The Daily Recommended Allowance is 1,000 mg per day for people aged 19-50 years 1,200 mg per day for people over the age of 51 years. The maximum level of calcium is 2.5 g/day. This is the minimum RDA. Consult your doctor concerning Calcium supplementation, as excess calcium has been associated with some mineral imbalances and may cause deposits to form in your kidneys; which could cause kidney stones.

23) Potassium – reported to reduce uptake of radioactive cesium-137. The Daily Recommended Allowance is about 3,500 milligrams daily. This is the minimum RDA. Consult your doctor concerning Potassium supplementation, as excessive potassium can be toxic and will affect your heart, but is mainly a problem when you suffer from a problem such as kidney failure.
