The Calendar of Yahovah

The Calendar of Yahovah

“And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith Yahovah.” ย  ย Isaiah 66:23

Yahovah is the Creator of all things; including a little known system of time keeping. Though this time keeping system is laid out in detail throughout the Bible, most people miss it and are unaware of it’s importance. According to scripture, Yahovah’s 29 to 30 day months begin with “new moons”, which is when the moon is just visable as a thin sliver, waxing anew.

In Hebrew, the first new moon of the year is calledย Rosh Chodashim (pronounced: Rosh Hodesheem),ย which translates as “the head of the months”.

It is well established that the month in Yahovah’s Calendar is lunar. The Hebrew concept for “month” and “new moon” are interchangeable.

To keep the years on a proper schedule, it was assigned that the first month could not start until the barley in Israel had reached a state of abib (or aviv), which is a certain state of ripeness.

It should be noted that the calendars that man have created do not coincide with the one given to us in the scriptures. These man made calendars have relied on other indicators such as a solstice. Interestingly, this system puts the beginnings of years, as is the case with the common Gregorian calendar, in the middle of winter. With Yahovah’s calendar, the new year begins right where it should, in a season that is more consistent with the concept of new beginnings; spring.

In the following text, we see Yahovahย speaking to Moses and Aaron concerning the first month of the year.

Exodus 12:1-2 “And Yahovah spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.”

Scripture also tells us that it is this first month of the year that the Children of Israel are given the pleasure of observing the festival of new beginnings, Passover (Pesach), and also the Feast of Unleavened Bread. These are both very important feasts of Yahovah designed to commemorate freedom from captivity in Egypt, as well as freedom from sin through the Messiah, Yeshua, known by many in the Western world as Jesus. These feasts give an individual the opportunity to “clean house” in their spiritual lives and get them into better shape. It also introduces the history of the watchful, promise keeping Elohim (God) of Abraham (Avraham), Issac (Yitshak) and Jacab (Ya’akov).

One of the more interesting things to note concerning new moons however, is a key point that is often missed; Yahovah desires worship on these new moon days.

We read in Isaiah 66:23 “And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith Yahovah.
The Hebrew word for worship in this text is transliterated as “shachah”, pronounced “sha-kha”, and it has the definition ofย bowing down.

Some individuals will insist that Isaiah’s statement represents a prophecy and therefore bowing down before Yahovah is something that will be instituted in the future, and as such it does not currently apply to believers. However, the scriptures are clear that bowing down before Yahovah on appointed Sabbaths and new moons was in fact a common practice held in accordance to scriptural command and is not a prophecy concerning a new practice that will be instituted in the future kingdom. In Ezekiel 46:1-3 we see the command of bowing down before Yahovah on Sabbaths and new moons being practiced amongst the believers in Israel. In this particular reference, the people of the region would bow down before Yahovaha at particular gate because Yahovah Himself had entered in at times through that gate.

1″Thus says Yahovah, The gate of the inner court that faces east shall be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day it shall be opened, and on the day of the new moon it shall be openedโ€ฆโ€ฆ.3The people of the land shall bow down at the entrance of that gate before Yahovah on the Sabbaths and on the new moons. ย Ezekiel 46:1-3

May we have the courage to approach Yahovah and walk with Him according to His desires and appointed times, and not our own. Acknowledge Him on this, His new moons (months), bow down before Him and give thanks for His many blessings.
